What is a MoleMap?
MoleMap is the world’s most innovative melanoma detection programme and has been designed to identify melanoma skin cancer as early as possible. MoleMap combines innovative technology with the skills of expert dermatologists to provide a thorough and accurate procedure that aims to give you the assurance and confidence to get on with life.
What happens during a MoleMap? MoleMap takes people’s concerns seriously and aims to provide the best possible experience. During the one hour consultation patients are seen by a nurse certified in the field of skin cancer. Their primary job is to create a baseline (or map) of your skin using conventional photographic techniques. Utilising skin surface microscopy, each suspicious mole or lesion is then digitally imaged, archived and linked to its relevant location on the body using technology pioneered right here in New Zealand. Any relevant data about the lesion such as an apparent change, itchiness, tenderness or general patient concern are recorded alongside each imaged lesion. Finally the patient’s history of melanoma, other skin cancers, sun exposure and other relevant clinical data is recorded to provide an overall risk assessment. This initial consultation usually takes one hour and is designed to be as thorough as possible to ensure that any mole that is remotely suspicious of melanoma is imaged and sent to the expert dermatologists for assessment. What happens after a MoleMap? All of the images and associated data are sent via a secure network to be diagnosed and reported on by a specialist dermatologist. Dermatologists in New Zealand have undergone a minimum of 13 years training, which includes general medical training followed by specialist training so they are true experts when it comes to diagnosing skin cancer. The data and images are then permanently archived on a remote central database for secure storage and access for future comparisons. In all instances the dermatologist prepares two reports, one copy of which goes to you and one to your designated doctor or specialist. It identifies any moles or lesions of concern and provides recommendations on the management of these. If the recommendation involves further procedures you are advised to discuss and coordinate these with your doctor or specialist.
