5 Sun protection tips for the summer

Tip #1: Use enough sunscreen.

To cover your entire body, you’ll need a shot glass worth of a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30+. For your face, you’ll need another teaspoon. When in doubt, slather more on, using enough to evenly cover the whole skin.

Tip #2: Apply sunscreen before heading outdoors.

Don’t just rub the sunscreen in until it disappears. Instead, 10-15 minutes before heading outdoors, apply a generous layer and let it adhere to the surface of the skin where it will become virtually invisible.

Tip #3: Coat yourself before you put on your clothes.

Make sure you don’t miss any spots of skin unprotected. The best way is to apply sunscreen before putting on your swimwear or clothes.

Tip #4: Keep your sunscreen bottle in the shade.

Ultraviolet-absorbing chemicals within sunscreen degrade at high temperatures, which reduces their effectiveness.

Tip #5: Reapply sunscreen throughout the day.

Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours and after swimming, perspiring or towelling.
