What is melanoma and what is my skin cancer risk level?
While a common mole can become cancerous it is rare and that is why it is crucial to have a regular mole check, particularly if your are medium to high risk - try our risk quiz here. Common moles are usually smaller than five millimetres, are perfectly evenly shaped and have a single colour. You should not expect a mole which has been around for quite some time to become dangerous. However, if you see that it starts changing during your own mole check, you should see a doctor immediately.

On the other hand, not all abnormal moles turn into skin cancer. Abnormal moles are pre-cancerous, but this does not mean they are skin cancer - in fact, most of them never become cancerous. Dermatologists recommend that they are monitored and removed only in case they pose serious danger.

It is also interesting to note that some skin cancer moles do not match all ABCDE criteria that is used to visually detect moles of concern.

A - is for Asymmetry

B - is for Borders that are irregular

C - is for Colour that is uneven

D - is for Diameter larger than 6 millimetres

E - is for Evolving

The reality is that some moles of concern are perfectly round and not asymmetric. You can also find some with fairly smooth edges and even colour, and it is even possible for a dangerous mole to fade into the skin. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to get a regular skin check or Full Body MoleMap.
