New Zealand’s UV rates are among the highest in the world, and every bit of UV damage all adds up. Even in winter, UVA rays are high enough to cause aging and skin cancer. Regular skin and mole checks is an excellent way of maximising your chances of identifying an early, otherwise undetected skin cancer.
A regular mole check can help prevent melanoma.

What is my skin cancer risk?
A key cause of melanoma is overexposure to the sun, and especially sunburn, which is particularly damaging to the skin. UV damage over time all adds up to increased risk of skin cancer, but there are other risk factors too – check out the seven risk factors of skin cancer.
Not sure what your melanoma risk is? Take our 1-minute risk check – if you’re medium to high risk, it’s a good idea to have an annual skin and mole check.
The MoleMap difference.
To find melanoma earlier we need to look for different, more subtle indicators that change is going on. You can help this process by looking for the above during your own mole check, but the reality is that there are experts who are well attuned to how subtle changes can be.
Very early stage melanoma early stage melanoma is difficult to diagnose with the naked eye, and therefore additional tools are required to help identify them. MoleMap use tools such as dermoscopy and digital serial dermoscopy that enable them to pick up melanoma that would otherwise have to grow significantly before they would be noticed during a mole check. That is why melanoma discovered by a specialist are often less invasive and have better survival outcomes than those discovered by patients.
If you have any moles that worry you, don’t leave it until it is too late, get them seen as soon as you can. Better still, if you have any of the following risk factors:
