MoleMap SpotChat

Patient guide and information.

What you need to know before and during your MoleMap SpotChat appointment.

Step 1

Before your appointment.

  • Read the photo guide at the bottom of this page.
  • Send a clear, close-up photo of the mole or moles you are concerned about to [email protected]
  • Put your name and date of birth in the email subject line so the melanographer (nurse) can identify you.

Step 2

What you need for the appointment.

  • The best device to use for the appointment is a smart phone (less than 7 years old is recommended).
  • A laptop or PC with a camera and microphone can also be used if you don't have a smart phone.
  • We recommend the use of the following internet browsers:
    • If you have an Android mobile phone - Chrome
    • If you have an iPhone - Safari
    • If you have a laptop, PC or Mac - Chrome, Firefox or Safari
  • Plan ahead to be in a quiet area where you will not be disturbed.

Step 3

15 mins before the appointment.

  • On the day of your appointment a website link will be sent to you, this is where your SpotChat appointment will be hosted. Click on this link to get started.
  • Enter your full name and the Clinic Access Code - this will be supplied to you by email and SMS.
  • Click 'Enable camera' then 'Allow'.
  • Wait in the waiting room until the melanographer starts the video call.
  • Read 'Step 4' while you wait.
  • Your melanographer may send you a text message within SpotChat. You can reply to this by typing and clicking 'Send'.

Step 4

During the appointment.

  • When the video call starts, you will see a live video of your melanographer.
  • You will see your own video in a small window at the top right of your screen. You can switch views between yourself and the melanographer by clicking on that video.
  • At the bottom of the main video screen you will see your call options, from left to right:
    • Camera on/off
    • Microphone on/off
    • Settings
    • End call
  • To end the call, click the red phone icon on your video screen and confirm, or cancel to return to the call.

Photo guide

How to take the best photo of your mole.

  • Choose the best available device for image quality - camera, smart phone or tablet.
  • Get someone else to take the photo if possible.
  • Make sure that you are in a well-lit room.
  • Circle the mole or lesion you are concerned about with a pen if you have others nearby.
  • Use a ruler or coin near the mole or lesions to show its size.

  • Keep the camera, phone or tablet lens parallel to your skin.
  • Get as close as you can while staying in focus - depending on the device it will likely be 10-20cm away.
  • Position the mole in the centre of the screen.
  • Ensure that there are no shadows in the image and that the light is even.
  • Hold the device steady and take several photos.

  • Review the photos and select the best one to send to us.
  • Send the largest file size you can.
  • Email the photo to [email protected] including your name and date of birth so we can identify you.
