“At my annual full body skin exam, the melanographer found a small pin-sized spot on my ear and recommended I have it examined further. It turned out to be cancerous. If it wasn’t for MoleMap, it would have gone unnoticed.”

Your questions, answered

How common is skin cancer in New Zealand?

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in New Zealand. Every year, approximately 80,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer. More than 6,000 of these diagnoses are melanoma. This is the deadliest form of skin cancer, accounting for around 80% of all skin cancer deaths.  More than 90% of skin cancers are a result of overexposure to UV rays.

The positive news is that being sun smart (reducing exposure to UV light) can help prevent skin cancer. Plus, most skin cancers can be successfully treated—if detected early. Take care of your skin — book a skin check today.

What does skin cancer look like?

Common signs of skin cancer can include:

  • A freckle, patch, or mole with irregular borders
  •
  • A firm lump or nodule
  •
  • A spot with a spreading or notched edge
  •
  • A mole that varies in colour (grey, pick, brown, black)
  •
  • A mole that’s increased in size
  •
  • A crusty sore that bleeds or won’t heal
  •
  • A dry, scaly patch of skin that’s shiny/pearlescent and pink or red in colour

It’s important to regularly check your skin and look for a spot or mole that’s sore, abnormal, changing, or new. Find out more about the SCAN Your Skin method.

How do you examine the skin at your skin cancer clinic Thames?

A melanographer performs a thorough skin check of the entire body at a macro level. Using the latest AI technology, atypical lesions are cross-checked in real-time against our comprehensive image database. Next, we use a dermatoscope to check individual moles more closely. We take dermoscopic (under the skin) images of any suspicious lesions. Those images are then passed on to a dermatologist, via Telehealth, for diagnosis. We follow the same, detailed process at all MoleMap clinic locations. Please see our services page for more details on the features of each skin check.
